Architecture

The building was constructed in 1965, but its origins go back to the 1930s. The architect, Carl André, found his inspiration in the famous Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier, and the five “pillars of architecture” as described by the master are clearly represented:

  • the structure is completely supported by steel I-beams, partially open;
  • the materials chosen for the ground floor add to the illusion of a floating structure;
  • the winter garden neutralizes the impact the building has on the environment;
  • the construction, based on two suspended layers of reinforced concrete, lacking any load bearing walls, allow for complete liberty in the design of the facade and floor plan;
  • the floor-to-ceiling windows optimize natural light in each room and allow panoramic views over the river and the forest.

Technical details

The building is located on a 2,473sqm (26,620sqft) lot, consisting of 1,848sqm (18,891sqft) grounds and parking lot (building footprint included) and 895sqm (9,633sqft) of private road. The road is open to the public, but not under servitude, and is perfectly usable, albeit non-constructible for being in a flood hazard zone; construction and/or use of river docking requires a permit from VNF. The road is maintained by the council. The property is situated on the banks of the river Oise.

Electricity and water mains have been newly constructed in 2011.The building is equipped with a high yield (HR+) LPG boiler, installed in 2013. A 1500kg/cap underground tank provides 3-4 months of heating and hot water. The ground floor offices have radiators; the apartment has underfloor heating everywhere. All plumbing is in maintenance free reinforced polyethylene (installed in 2011), the electric installation is monophasic and was installed in 2008. The maximum capacity of the building is 24 phone lines, with two currently active with Free (running at approximately 16Mbit). Fiber optic cabling is installed and should be made available in 2018.

Nogent sur Oise

The building is located on the industrial park South of Nogent sur Oise; this means absolute calm after 5pm on weekdays, and during the weekend. Next door neighbours include a technicenter for container trucks, a recycling center, a community college, and the Customs office.

The city of Nogent sur Oise is part of the greater Creil area (350,000 inhabitants), in the south of the Oise département. This places it in the greater Paris suburbs, with access to the RER D train, plus TER and intercity trains with Paris Gare du Nord at 25 minutes.

Access to the A1 motorway is at 10 minutes, with Paris Porte de la Chapelle at 45 minutes, or Lille at 1:45 hours, Brussels at 2:30 hours. Charles de Gaulle Airport is at 20 minutes, and Paris-Beauvais Airport, France’s primary RyanAir hub, at 40 minutes.

Creil’s railway station, at 5 minutes from the building, will become a TGV station in the near future (on the Nord line, Paris-Lille-Brussels-Amsterdam and Eurostar). A rail link to Roissypole/Charles de Gaulle Airport is planned; currently a direct bus line goes to Roissypole.
